Tips for Safe Driving in India:
- India has a left-hand driving system with the driver’s seat located on the right hand side of the vehicle. Guests from countries with right-hand driving system might require some time for adjustment.
- Lock your car doors as soon as you enter the car. Do not be distracted by anyone asking you to step out. There are gangs who operate by indicating that you have either dropped something or your car tyre(s) is punctured. See our Scams section for more on these.
- Check your car tyres before getting in the car.
- Keep your windows rolled up.
- Check the backseat and car floor before getting into the car.
- Keep your wallet, cell phone and other valuables next to you – in front of you. Most cars have specific spaces for safe storage of cell-phones. Some gangs operate by distracting the driver and picking valuables off the passenger seats or dashboards.
- Keeping your windows rolled up and valuables out-of-sight from the windows will keep you safe.
- Avoid driving through unlit or dimly lit traffic-free routes
- Park in well-lit designated parking areas.
- Don’t leave valuables or packages inside your parked car where they can be seen. Lock them in the trunk or beneath the passenger seat.
