What to do if you lose your passport in India?
- File an FIR or First Information Report with the local police authorities as soon as possible. If you think you know where your passport was lost or stolen (in a hotel, airport, railway station, etc.) you should report the loss to the authorities at that location and the police.
- Contact your respective embassy or consulate for notification and replacement of lost passport with photocopy of your passport (if available), the FIR, Proof of Identity and citizenship, passport-size photographs and passport replacement fees.
- You will also need to apply for an Exit Visa at the Foreigner’s Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Government of India with your newly replaced passport. You cannot leave India without an Exit Visa.
