Jaisalmer is one of the most important tourist destinations in Rajasthan. It is located in the desert region of Rajasthan, known as The Golden City; it was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D. He was a descendent of the Yadav Clan and a Bhatti Rajput. The Desert festival of Jaisalmer is very popular among the tourists. Colorful craft bazaars are set up for the Desert festival and a sound and light spectacle is organized with folk artists performing against the splendid backdrop of the famous Sam sand dunes on the full moon night. Prime Attractions of Jaisalmer

Desert Festival: A celebration of Rajput heritage, Desert festival is held between January and February. Camel race and other cultural programmes are main attraction of The Desert Festival. Many interesting competitions are held during this festival. It is full of singing and dancing.

Camel Safari:
Camel Safari has been an experience that is happening since the ancient times. For tourists, Camel safari is a very exiting way to explore the Thar Desert. It is an exiting and soft adventure, and helps to explore the small and remote desert villages of Rajasthan. Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation arranges the camel safari on request from Delhi and Jaipur during Nagaur Fair and desert festival. Generally Camel Safaris are organized in the winter. Summers of Rajasthan are very hot and dry. Jaisalmer is the best place for Camel safari which is well connected by air, train and road to the rest of India. All camel-safari towns in Rajasthan, such as Bikaner and Mandawa, are connected by road to Jaipur. Regular bus services are available from all the major towns of the state, and private cars or taxis can be hired to do the trip.

Tourist Places of Jaisalmer

 Jaisalmer Fort: The Jaisalmer Fort is situated about 100 m over the city. It is known as The Golden Fort or Sonar Quila. The fort has four gateways-Akhaiya Pol, Ganesh Pol Suraj pol and hava Pol. The main market place called Manek Chowk is located outside the fort.

Patwon Ki Haveli: Jaisalmer is famous for its magnificent Havelis. This five storey high Haveli is the largest Haveli in Jaisalmer. It is divided into six apartments.

Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli: This 19th century Haveli is famous for its architecture and craftsmanship. Its interiors are extensively decorated with splendid miniature paintings.

Salim Singh Ki Haveli: It was built about 300 years ago. Salim Singh was the prime minister when Jaisalmer was the capital of the state.

Gadi Sagar Lake: Built in 1367 by Maharaja Gadi Singh comes alive during Gangaur festival in March with migratory birds. Now it is connected with Indra Gandhi Canal. Its north and east banks are full of temples and ghats.


Tourist Attractions Around Jaisalmer

Lodurva: 16 km North West of Jaisalmer, famous for Jain temples, Kalpatru or divine tree is the main attractions here.

Akal Fossil Park: It houses of 18 fossilized chirs and deodars trees of Lower Jurrasic age.

Khuri: It has a glimpse of rural life of Rajasthan and one can enjoy desert architecture with camel safari.
