About Alleppey
Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha is one of the finest backwater sites of Kerala. Its claim to fame, however is the famous boat race held every year and telecast prominently by the national media. The place attracts visitors mainly during winters. Alleppey is also famous for its coir products. Thousands of people swarm to Annamada Kayal during August-September to witness the boat race christened as Nehru Trophy in the backwaters. Almost 120 competitors in each boat resembling snakes burn their calories to win the top honour. The two storied Krishnapuram temple is also flocked by devotees. Gajendra Miksham, the largest mural painting is displayed in the temple premises. Ambalapuzha Temple of Lord Krishna is another beautiful temple here. A place fortunate to have many beautiful temples apart from the magnificent backwaters, Kottamkulangara Mahavishnu Temple, Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple and Mullackal Temple are widely visited. St. Andrews church is another architectural delight. Appelley is connected by national highway 47 with most major places of Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is at Kochi at a distance of 64 kms.
